Ederlezi

Song in Kurdish language

Ederlezi (song) is a popular traditional folk song of the Roma minority in the Balkans.

The song got its name after Ederlezi which is a Spring festival, especially celebrated by Roma people in the Balkans (and elsewhere around the world). This holiday celebrates the return of springtime. Ederlezi is the Romani name for the Bulgarian and Serbian Feast of Saint George. It's celebrated on 6 May [O.S. 23 April]. The various Balkan spellings (Herdeljez, Erdelezi) are variants of the Turkish Hıdırellez, a holiday signaling the beginning of spring, occurring approximately 40 days after the spring equinox. Goran Bregović's version (titled "Ederlezi (Scena Djurdjevdana Na Rijeci)"), which actually made the song famous. LINK youtube

Leica T

Leica Camera AG presents a new camera system that combines the fine art of engineering and hand-crafted excellence with design and handling in an entirely new and innovative concept. From the initial idea through to the development process and in its final assembly, the focus of all disciplines involved was on one single thing - perfection. The outcome was the creation of the Leica T-System, a camera with an exquisite finish ‘made in Germany’ that, together with a portfolio of precise, high-performance lenses, offers exceptional versatility and particularly intuitive handling. Unique in design and pared down to the essential functions, the new Leica T-System offers everything anyone could ever need for pure, creative photography and the best image quality. In collaboration with AUDI Design, the typical design language of Leica cameras was revisited and reinterpreted. With its timeless and sleek design, the Leica T picks up the unmistakeable attributes of Leica product design and develops them systematically - with clean lines, smooth surfaces and formal minimalism. One of the camera’s outstanding features is its compact and solid body.
This is manufactured with innovative precision techniques from a single block of aluminium at the Leica factory. The use of premium materials and their processing in an elaborate manufacturing process are unique in the history of camera construction and lend the Leica T an unmistakeable look, feel and solidity. Its substantial weight and a newly developed operating concept underline its user-friendly handling and, together, these features ensure an incomparable photographic experience. LINK leica

Small Data
March 27–Apri 26, 2014

bitforms gallery nyc

bitforms gallery is pleased to announce Small Data, a second solo exhibition in New York with Daniel Canogar. Featuring the premiere of a new series, the exhibit includes nine video projection-mapped objects that are intimate in scale.

Based in Spain, Canogar is renowned internationally for his use of discarded electronic materials in his photography, video, sculpture and installations. Finding inspiration in the archeology of new media, he brings the dead back to life. Secrets contained beyond an object's surface are revealed, as he constructs portraits of a society and an age. Canogar is also the creator of numerous public art installations, many of them engaging the participation of local communities, such as Waves in Houston, the world's largest arabesque LED video sculpture; Constelaciones in Madrid at MRío Park, the largest photo mosaic in Europe; and Travesías in Brussels, a commission for the atrium of the European Union Council in 2010. LINK bitforms

Gabriel García Márquez

Gabriel García Márquez Believed by many to be one of the world’s greatest writers, Gabriel García Márquez is a Colombian-born author and journalist, winner of the 1982 Nobel Prize for Literature and a pioneer of the Latin American “Boom.” Affectionately known as “Gabo” to millions of readers, he first won international fame with his masterpiece, One Hundred Years of Solitude, a defining classic of twentieth century literature. Whether writing short stories, epic novels, or nonfiction, Gabo is above all a brilliant storyteller, and his writing is a tribute to both the power of the imagination and the mysteries of the human heart. In Gabo’s world, where flowers rain from the sky and dictators sell the very ocean, reality is subject to emotional truths as well as physical boundaries. It is a world of great beauty and great cruelty; a world where love brings both redemption and enslavement; and a world where the lines between objective reality and dreams are hopelessly blurred. It is a world very much like our own. LINK

Jeff Wall: Tableaux, Pictures, Photographs, 1996 - 2013 presents recent work in color and black and white, and features the new, previously unseen diptych Summer Afternoons (2013). Since the 1980s, Wall has produced critically acclaimed work in the form of color transparencies backlit by fluorescent light strips and presented in lightboxes. He was one of the first artists to make photographs on a large scale. The standard lightbox was created for the primary purpose of outdoor advertising. In Wall’s work, this medium became a platform for his figurative tableaux, street scenes and interiors, landscapes and cityscapes. LINK stedelijk

Christian Boltanski

The historical events that have accompanied Christian Boltanski's life - such as the end of the Great War and the liberation of Paris - mark all of his work. As a fourteen-year old, he devoted himself to painting. At 27, he gained recognition for exhibitions at Sonnabend Gallery in 1971 and Documenta in Kassel in 1972, and continued to distinguish himself in the international scene with a series of exhibitions in the United States that began in 1987, travelling to New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and then, in the 1990s, to numerous European museums. In the early 2000s, Boltanski turns to large-scale installations and participates in sound installations. It is also in this period that he begins his Heart Archives project (Archives Du Coeur). His installations become more complex with the use of sound as movement. Boltanski's works are an affirmation of total artwork, l'Art Total. During much of his life, he devoted himself to teaching and he produced more than 100 books of various artists. Christian Boltanski lives and works in Malakoff, outside Paris, but spends most of his time travelling to create new projects around the world. LINK christian-boltanski

George W. Bush

The Art of Leadership: A President's Personal Diplomacy

April 5, 2014 through June 3, 2014
@ the George W. Bush Presidential Center

George W. Bush has had a couple of accidental art exhibitions, when hacker Guccifer released images of his paintings taken from his emails. Since then, he's been pretty open about his retirement pursuit, and now he's now planning to have a real, live art show. The nice thing about being a former president is that you don't have to worry too much about which gallery is going to host your work. Bush will be showing in his own presidential library, whose website promises not just an art show, but a whole exhibit on his "personal diplomacy," including two dozen portraits the former president has painted. LINK bushcenter

Ed Atkins

@ De Hallen
14 March until 9 June 2014

Superficial Hygiene aims to introduce to the Netherlands a set of practices of a younger generation of artists who employ, adapt, and corrupt the grammar of our accelerated environment to propose a new understanding of the relation between the mediated image and text, and objects and the physical body. The most recent developments in image production allow for a new kind of realism, one, which has caused a further rift between objects and their representation. As a result, our physical relationship with images and things in our daily environment is changing. Superficial Hygiene brings together diverse artistic practices in which this new relationship between the artificial and the real is scrutinized. LINK De Hallen
